The furniture industry is often evolving, and this year we are seeing some wonderful trends we’re loving. As new trends come in and out with the seasons, it is important to note you do not need to include all in your furniture repertoire, just the ones that make sense to your style or taste. Here are a few we’ve been seeing this year, which are more likely to stay most seasons.

Shearling furniture

Shearling furniture has made an appearance to bring comfort and visual calmness to our living rooms. A big trend this year, shearling or faux-shearling pieces are crafted to add volume and act as cozy accents no matter what your style is. To keep your space more balanced or toned down, opt for chair cushions for a cozy armless seat. If you want to fully embrace the trend add an ottoman or two for a big, plush sectional perfect for get-togethers.

Velvet Furniture

A favourite of French royalty, velvet has always been a material with sensorial origins. Revived for generations, this sumptuous fabric has embraced many of our favourite pieces and defined furniture decor. To bring it back to the contemporary world, the best way to introduce velvet is by keeping one to two pieces in this fabric. Consider lighter tones and neutrals on more modern styles rather than vintage pieces, so the trend can transition easily through other seasons.

Iconic, Vintage Pieces

Vintage furniture encourages individualism and personal expression with its nostalgic and beautifying DNA. A conscious solution to an eco-friendly, environmentally-conscious future, shopping vintage works to charm your space while also doing good to the planet. With a lived-in feel, consider pieces that may be visually captivating, and that contrast the rest of your furniture. For example, mirrors with interesting frames, accent tables with an apothecary feel, a curious decor or lamp, or even a chair with upholstery reminiscent of the 19th century.

Sculptural Showstoppers

Life has always been inspired by art, and this reflection in furniture is no different. Structural pieces are making a comeback this year, with incredibly modern art inspirations, and sculptural silhouettes. It’s all about finding that piece that speaks to you and works with your space, something you can also see every day without obstructing the rest of the room. Typically made from organic fabrics, wool, canvas, and natural wood think of one key chair, or compelling table that you can resonate with.

Extra Comfy Furniture

A close cousin to shearling furniture, extra comfy pieces are here to make a statement this year. Plump, plush structures are all the design rage, with pieces ranging from large couches to more minimal ottomans. Opt for accent pieces with deep tones of blues, greens or pastel pinks to contrast your otherwise neutral furniture. If you plan on investing in a larger piece, a gray-toned or cream hue is always more welcoming to the naked eye.

Japandi Design

Inspired by the Japanese and Scandinavian ethos of minimalism and simplicity, the Japandi trend emphasizes sustainability and natural materials. Japandi design encourages clean lines and the use of open spaces. Wood, bamboo, and rattan are three of the most popular finishes for this type of furniture trend, focusing on eco-friendly pieces in neutral colours. Incorporating not just furniture but accessories will help you achieve this style, especially when it comes to baskets, containers, and minimal (natural) storage pieces.

Modern Art Deco

Finally, the modern art deco trend makes an appearance in this year’s trendy furniture forecast. This trend pays homage to the 1920s and 1930s: the symmetrical, bold motifs, and patterns. Furniture of this nature typically features trapezoidal shapes, zigzag patterns, chevron patterns, triangular shapes and abstract, nude females. Think of angular forms with lines forming sophisticated, fluid shapes á la Great Gatsby, and focus on investing in wallpaper, accent pieces and decor (female-form vases) to keep it more contemporary, instead of an exclusive art deco aesthetic.
